You likely won’t lose even if you ignored it. You can link moves for combos, which is a neat idea that I haven’t really seen in any other Pokémon game, but again, it’s mostly for a “win-more” type of playstyle. Of course I didn’t want to play in this manner, but half the time, my partners were decimating the field with long-range power moves in normal mode anyway. If you really want to take your hands off, you can utilize the new auto mode, which plays the game – aside from battles – for you. While you could also just choose your own moves, this efficient way pulls back the curtain on how simplistic the fights are. Here, it feels more rote, as you can simply press one button, and your Pokémon will automatically use its most effective move. When the first game came out, the gameplay was a fresh take on the series. Elements like range, direction, and area effect also matter in the grid-based battle system. For example, water beats fire but is weak to grass, as Pokémon fans know well. You have four moves at your disposal, much like the main series, and using stronger moves that target an enemy weakness is super effective. Once you are in range with an opponent, you engage in battle.
As long as you don’t move, you have time to think about your strategy and fight approach. Every time you move, everyone on the map moves including your allies and enemies. Generally, your goal is to find the stairs until you get to where you need to be, whether that is a boss, an item, or another Pokémon. The dungeons are procedurally-generated, so the maps will be different every time you go in. Roguelite elements are present, and definitely much more forgiving than others in the genre. You and your rescue team, which now incorporates up to eight Pokémon at once, traverse through a series of dungeons, performing missions and fetch quests. The gameplay has elements of the mainline Pokémon games but is far closer to a roguelike dungeon crawler. It’s very much a tale meant for children, but it may instill deeper feelings in older players. As the story develops, you meet new Pokémon, both good and rotten, and the truth of your situation becomes clearer. As the story begins, you wake up with no memory but quickly become involved in a rescue team with your partner. A unique and charming aspect about this spinoff is that you can understand Pokémon speech, since you are one, so it feels like you are talking to comrades as opposed to a captured team. You also get to choose a partner Pokémon from a small selection. In the game, your player transforms into a Pokémon, and a personality quiz helps you decide who to start as (I was a Squirtle!).
